Trigger Finger

Introduction

Trigger finger is also termed as Stenosing tenosynovitis and if only the thumb is affected, the condition is called trigger thumb. This painful condition is caused due to the inflammation which leads to narrowing of the space in the sheath found around the finger’s tendon. Severe form of trigger finger can lead to stiffness of fingers in bent position which is very painful. Usually, the people indulging in too much gripping actions repetitively are at high risk of getting affected by this condition. Women are more prone to it as compared to men and also diabetes increases its risk.

Signs and Symptoms

Trigger finger does not take severe form suddenly and advances from mild to severe form gradually. Some of the major signs and symptoms of this condition are:

  • Stiffness of the fingers usually in the morning on waking up.
  • Sensation of snapping or clicking on moving the finger.
  • A bump or tender area at the affected finger’s base.
  • Locking or catching of the finger in a bent position which becomes suddenly straight or pops up.
  • Inability to straighten the locked finger in a bent position.
  • Painful clicking worse on keeping the fingers still for long time and gets ameliorated by moving it.
  • Symptoms become worse while trying to grasp anything firmly or trying to straighten the finger.

Causes

Bones are attached to muscles through fibrous cords known as tendons and a sheath surrounds these tendons uniformly for protecting them. Inflammation or irritation of this protective sheath results in a trigger finger because it makes tendons difficult to glide through the sheath while in motion. When this inflammation or irritation lasts for a longer period of time, this leads to thickening, scarring of sheath or formation of nodules in tendons worsening the movement of fingers.

Risk Factors

There are certain factors which increases the chances of getting the trigger finger, like:

  • Indulging in occupation or having hobbies involving repetitive grasping movement of hands or long gripping actions
  • Certain health ailments like rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes
  • Women are more prone
  • Surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome

Diagnosis

Any elaborated tests are not needed for the diagnosis of trigger finger. Thorough medical history and detailed physical examination helps in the diagnosis of this condition by your doctor. During the physical exam, the patient is asked to do the gripping and grasping movements, opening and closing hands for checking the locking of fingers and tender areas. Palms are also checked to detect any nodule or lump present at the base of affected fingers.

Treatment

Severity and duration of the trigger finger decides the treatment which one needs to be given. Usually in the modern medicine system, the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are given to alleviate the pain and relieve the inflammation of the sheath surrounding the tendon. Rest and stretching exercises are advised along with medicines. Surgery can also be advised in severe cases where a patient is not responding to the medicines.

Ayurveda can help in the treatment of trigger finger naturally and in a better way as there are several herbs offered by nature and different herbal combinations prepared using them adhering strictly to the Ayurvedic principles. All these herbs and herbal combinations possess therapeutic properties, which helps in relieving the inflammation of the tendons and surrounding sheath and relieves pain naturally without installing any chemicals or harming things in the body.
