How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

Posted on August 28, 2024August 28, 2024 By Emily Brown No Comments on How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

Abortion pills are used as a medical abortion method to terminate early pregnancies. It stops the pregnancy from progressing further and eliminates it from the uterus.

Medical abortion is quite a popular abortion method among women who are seeking privacy and want to stay away from the judgment of society. Getting an abortion has been considered taboo for ages, but with abortion pills, you can end your pregnancy at home or anywhere you are comfortable.

There’s no need to visit a clinic to administer the abortion pills. You can just buy abortion pills online from a trusted source. Abortion pills are effective up to 10  weeks of pregnancy, as approved by the FDA. Many people have asked, How do I terminate a pregnancy at 5 weeks? The answer is simple: just get an abortion pill online and perform an at-home medical abortion.

Things to Do Before Taking Abortion Pills

The first thing to do before taking the abortion pills is to visit your physician. When you visit the clinic, your healthcare provider will run some tests to find out how far along in your pregnancy you are (gestational age).

Discuss if medical abortion is the right decision with your doctor, although the final decision has to be yours. Also, ask what abortion options you have and if medical abortion is the right choice for you.

Remember, medical abortion is only recommended up to 10 weeks into pregnancy. After 10 weeks, usually, surgical abortion is recommended.

You can expect a lot of bleeding and discomfort after taking misoprostol, so plan early on to make the procedure more comfortable. You can rest at home or wherever you feel most comfortable.

A heating pad for cramps and plenty of food, movies, books, and other pass-the-time stuff should be stocked. Make sure you have painkillers like ibuprofen; avoid using aspirin as it could increase bleeding.

You might want to have someone you trust with you (or nearby) who you can contact if you need help. The abortion procedure takes several hours, so if possible, free your schedule for the day and focus solely on self-care.

How Does Abortion Pills Work?

Abortion pills are extremely effective in ending an unwanted pregnancy. The two common abortion pills used to terminate the pregnancy are mifepristone and misoprostol. You can buy abortion pill pack online that consists of both of these abortion pills.

Mifepristone blocks the progesterone hormone, separates the fetus from the uterine lining, and stops the growth of the pregnancy. While misoprostol dilates the cervix and causes uterine contractions, expelling the pregnancy tissues from the uterus and ending the pregnancy,

The medical abortion regimen involves taking mifepristone (200 mg) and then four misoprostol tablets (0.2 mg). Misoprostol should be taken within 24 to 48 hours after taking mifepristone.

Mifepristone can be taken orally on an empty stomach or with a light meal. However, you cannot take Misoprostol on an empty stomach. Have a light or full meal before taking Misoprostol tablets.

Misoprostol tablets can be taken orally, buccally (keep two tablets in each cheek pocket and let them dissolve), sublingually (keep the tablets under your tongue and let them dissolve), or vaginally (insert the pills into your vagina towards the cervix and let them dissolve).

What to Expect During a Medical Abortion?

For a few days, you might have cramps or fatigue, and you’ll experience bleeding and spotting for a bit. The majority of people resume their regular activities the day following a medical abortion.

Make sure you have a cozy spot where you can recover on the day you take misoprostol. After a day or two, you may feel drained, but you should soon feel refreshed.

Here Are Some of the Side Effects of Abortion Pills You Can Expect:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Chills
  • Fevers
  • Cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Heavy Bleeding

Any chills, fevers, or nausea you experience should subside quickly. If you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever for more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol, contact your doctor or a health center immediately. It could be a sign of an infection.

Can Taking an Abortion Pill Affect Your Periods?

You may bleed or spot for several weeks after your abortion, and that’s normal. You can use menstrual pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, whatever is comfortable for you. However, your doctor or nurse may suggest you use pads to track your bleeding throughout the abortion.

You should resume your regular period 4–8 weeks after your abortion because an abortion starts a new menstrual cycle. Your birth control situation may affect when you get your period next.

If you’re not on hormonal birth control, you can expect your period by 8 weeks after your abortion. If you’re not using hormonal birth control and you don’t get your period 8 weeks after your abortion, call your nearest Planned Parenthood health center.

When to Take Birth Control after a Medical Abortion?

You can start with birth control quickly after you complete the abortion process. There are high chances of getting pregnant immediately after having a medical abortion. Talk to your healthcare provider about your birth control options as soon as possible. They can help you find the best birth control option for you.
