Introduction

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is a species of an asparagus plant and considered as a female tonic. This herb contains various natural anti-oxidants and micronutrients. Shatavari is also known as a plant that has 100 roots. It helps to increase breast milk production naturally.

The constituents of Shatavari are bioflavonoids, hydrogenates, trace minerals like zinc, selenium, potassium, manganese, cobalt, copper, magnesium and calcium which are essential for our body.

Description

Shatavari has small branches (pine-needle-like phylloclades) that are smooth and shiny green. The minute, white flowers appear in July on small, spiny stems, and it produces fruits (blackish-purple, globular berries) in September. It has an adventitious root system (in which root arise from another organ except root) with tuber roots. The roots are about one meter in length.

Shatavari is sweet and bitter in taste, thick, has cold potency, rejuvenative property, improves digestive fire, good for eyes, increases sperm count, promotes milk production, provides strength, useful in diarrhea, tumors, cardiac disorders, and inflammation. The flowers are light, balances the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), beneficial in hemorrhoids and tuberculosis.

Uses of Shatavari

Shatavari herb has various beneficial effects on our body.

It Includes

1. Lowers Blood Glucose Levels

The Shatavari root can be used to treat diabetes. Shatavari stimulates the insulinproduction in pancreas hence it control high blood glucose levels. Shatavari improves the glucose transporter’s activity so that they transport more glucose to muscles and cells and a lesser amount to blood.

2. Improves Digestion

Shatavari is considered as a digestive supporter in the Ayurveda. It is used to treat digestion-related diseases. Shatavari promotes digestion by improving the activity of the digestive enzymes (lipase and amylase).

3. Diarrhea and Dysentery

 Shatavari is used as an herbal remedy for diarrhea and dysentery. It may decrease the volume of stools and gastrointestinal motility. It also inhibits the secretion of electrolytes and fluid in the stools. Thus it is very useful in the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery.

4. Ulcers

Shatavari may help in the treatment of gastric ulcers by controlling the release of hydrochloric acid.

5. Anti-aging

 The saponins in Shatavari root reduces the free-radical that cause skin damage which leads to wrinkles. Shatavari also prevents breakdown of  collagen and maintains our skin’s elasticity.

6. Breast Enlargement

Shatavari is an essential herb that improves the development of breast in women.

7. Infections
