Posted on May 5, 2020May 5, 2020 By Dr. Vikram Chauhan No Comments on What Are The Benefits And side-effects of Grape Wine?

Fermented grapes are used to make wine. As we know that alcohol is not good for health, wine has many beneficial effects but only in small amounts as a supplement or medicine. A high amount of grape wine also causes side effects. Thus, it is better to consume wine following the doctor’s advice. Wine is rich in nutritional value, including calcium, protein, sodium, potassium, carbohydrates, sugar, etc. In ancient times, red wine was used as a medicine to diagnose many health problems. In this article, we have discussed the benefits of wine and its side effects.

Benefits of Grape Wine

There are various benefits of wine on the body. As we mentioned that only a small amount of wine is useful and helps to manage skin problems, heart health, mental health, weight, etc.

1 For Heart Health

The wine has antioxidants such as proanthocyanidins, resveratrol, and quercetin. These components help reduce oxidative stress and thus reduce the risk of heart disorder and also help in lowering cholesterol levels. But wine consumption should be limited.

Regular intake of small amounts of non-alcoholic red wine helps to reduce high blood pressure and also reduces the risk of hypertension such as kidney problem, heart attack, eye discomfort etc. Wines contain antioxidants such as polyphenols and also protect the arteries from damage and control blood pressure.

2 For Liver Health

Due to the presence of antioxidants like resveratrol in wine and shows a hepatoprotective effect. A small amount of alcohol is good for the liver, but it should be taken only after consulting a doctor because its excessive consumption can lead to liver damage and avoid wine if someone is already a liver patient.

3 For The Brain

The intake of wine in a small amount is good for the brain and nervous system. Resveratrol, an antioxidant, helps to protect the brain and is also helpful in dementia. It helps to reduce the build-up of the platelets present in the blood and removes the blockage of blood vessels and dilates them and improves the blood supply to the brain. But avoid excessive intake because it can create other health problems.

4 Increase Omega 3 Fatty Acids in The Body

Drinking small amounts of wine regularly as medicine helps to increase the level of   omega-3 fatty acid in red blood cells and plasma which helps to support the heart health and prevent heart problems.

5 For Eye Health

The presence of resveratrol makes drinking wine beneficial for the eyes. It reduces the risk of vision loss and other eye problems by increasing glutathione levels which is an antioxidant present in the body.

6 To Improve Sleep

Wine can be helpful for a good sleep because it contains a hormone called melatonin which helps in improving sleep. But it is better to consume wine after the doctor’s advice.

7 For Strengthening Bones

Wine is rich in phytoestrogens, phenolic compounds, and natural antioxidants which are beneficial for bone health. Consuming a little amount of wine keeps bones healthy and protects bones from fracture or major bone mass loss.

8 For Teeth

Red wine is good for teeth because it helps remove bacteria and streptococcus that cause cavities in teeth. In addition, resveratrol present in wine helps manage dental problems. But it can cause staining on the teeth, so better to use wine for teeth after consulting the dentist.

9 For Skin Health

Wine also promotes skin health and effectiveness in many skin problems such as skin aging, pimples and skin cancer as it possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic properties. It also protects the skin from being damaged by harmful sun rays due to the presence of resveratrol present in it.

10 For Healthy Hair

Wine can help to improve the circulation of blood in the scalp and reduce hair-related problems.

11 For Weight Loss

Regular intake of small amounts of red wine is helpful for women to control weight. It helps in controlling increasing calories which helps for weight loss.

Other Benefits of Grape Wine

  1. You can use wine as a flavouring agent, or a spice to make food.
  2. You can apply red wine on the face or you can make a face pack by mixing wine, yogurt and honey. But perform a patch test once before using a face pack prepared with red wine.
  3. You can also apply red wine to your hair. Add a little conditioner to the red wine and apply it on the hair after washing the hair and after a few minutes wash the hair.

Side Effects of Grape Wine

  1. Consuming excessive amounts of wine regularly can make you addicted to alcohol.
  2. Consuming more than 1-2 glasses of wine on a regular basis can increase the risk of liver-related diseases.
  3. Red wine usually helps in losing weight, but high intake of wine can increase weight.
  4. It can be harmful to infants, so pregnant and lactating women should avoid this.
  5. Grapes can also cause indigestion and in some cases, it can also cause diarrhea.
  6. Frequent intake of excessive alcohol may increase the risk of diabetes in men.

Conclusion

The above information included both the benefits and side effects of grape wine. Therefore, it is important to focus on both. This does not mean that you can consume wine freely. Consuming a small and balanced amount of wine as medicine is beneficial but not beneficial in high amounts, it can cause side effects. So, do not consume wine for fun and it is better to consult a doctor before using wine.
