In this fast-paced life, where women are juggling various roles and managing home and work responsibilities, a woman mostly ignores taking care of her own health. This article will shed light on one such gynecological issue which women often tend to avoid, that is Leucorrhoea and also the Ayurvedic management for Leucorrhoea.

What is leucorrhoea?

The thick or thin vaginal discharge from the female genitals has a foul smell and transparent, white or greenish pallor, this condition is called Vaginitis or Leucorrhoea.

Mostly, vaginal discharge is normal. The amount, color, and odour can be different always, depending on the individual situation. For instance, there will be more discharge during breastfeeding, ovulation, during the time of sexual arousal, or pregnancy. These changes are common unless foul smell or changes in colour seem different than usual, significantly, if an individual also has vaginal burning and itching, they could suffer from an infection.

According to Ayurveda, Leucorrhea is called Shvetapradara. Shveta means “white” and ‘Pradara’ signifies ‘discharge from the vagina’. It occurs due to the imbalance of vaginal microflora which ultimately results in the infection. Furthermore, an imbalance of Kapha Dosha is responsible for leucorrhea. Aggravation of Kapha Dosha impairs the Rasa Dhatu which leads to leucorrhea. It is a natural phenomenon of every women’s body to maintain a healthy vagina and flush out microorganisms. Ayurvedic treatment for Leucorrhoea is one of the best options for treating it at ayurvedic clinic.

What are the causes of Leucorrhoea?

  • Improper diet: Consuming too much spicy, sour, oily, and fried foods can cause an imbalance in the Kapha Dosha and Pitta Dosha, leading to leucorrhoea.
  • Sedentary lifestyle/day sleep (Diva Nidra): In Ayurveda, a sedentary lifestyle and excessive daytime sleep (diva Nidra) can lead to an imbalance in the Kapha Dosha, which can contribute to the development of various health conditions, including leucorrhoea.
  • Weak immune system: Weak and debilitated immune system can lead to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria and fungi, causing leucorrhoea.
  • Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances, especially those that occur during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause, can also result in leucorrhoea.
  • Stress: High levels of stress can weaken the immune system and disrupt the balance of the doshas, leading to leucorrhoea.
  • Lack of personal hygiene: Poor hygiene practices, like not washing the genital area properly and regularly, can lead to the accumulation of harmful bacteria and fungi, leading to leucorrhoea.
  • Yeast infections (Candidiasis): It occurs when there is an overgrowth of the fungus Candida in the vagina, leading to symptoms such as itching, burning, and abnormal vaginal discharge.

Symptoms of Leucorrhoea

  • White or yellowish vaginal discharge: The discharge can be of white or yellowish colour and its consistency can be thick, sticky or it can be thin as well, with a foul odor (smell).
  • Itching and irritation in the genital area: Itching might be present along with redness and swelling (inflammation).
  • Pain and discomfort during intercourse: The vaginal walls can get inflamed, causing pain during intercourse.
  • Weakness and fatigue: Leucorrhoea can cause weakness and fatigue(exhaustion) due to the loss of essential nutrients from the body.
  • Backache and abdominal pain: The inflammation in the genital area can lead to pain in the lower back and abdomen.
  • Headache and dizziness: Leucorrhoea can cause headaches and dizziness due to the loss of nutrients in the body.
  • Frequent urination: In some cases, leucorrhoea can lead to frequent urination.
